Why are you interested in medicine/Why do you want to be a doctor?: I want to pursue medicine because I believe becoming a doctor is a very rewarding profession and I want to pave the way for other minority females to pursue their passion. Although becoming a doctor is a very long path with many hardships, I know that once I am able to see a smile on my patient’s face it will be worth it. In addition, I find medicine very fascinating because it is an ongoing learning experience. You are always learning something new about the human body, treatments, diseases and more. For these reasons, that is why I want to become a doctor.

Co-op/work/volunteer experience: In high school, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a local clinic. Through this experience, I became well acquainted with a healthcare environment. I was able to learn more about the process of getting into medicine due to my networking with some of the doctors and other volunteers. Although my duties mainly consisted of filing records and helping out with administration, I was able to gain more exposure on how physicians work on a daily basis.

If you were to give advice to other pre-med students, what would it be?: Although doing well in your courses is very important, it is also important to gain exposure and explore different career options the medical field can offer. You could volunteer at clinics, hospitals, join medicine-related clubs and competitions. This will enhance your medical school application and make you a competitive applicant for many schools. It is understandable that doing well in your classes while also volunteering may seem overwhelming, however it is possible if you manage your time and prioritize. With that being said, it is also very important not to burn-out. It is common knowledge that becoming a doctor is a very long process, so it is vital to take everything one step at a time.

Fun fact: I really love cats and I can make awesome brownies.
